A total of 19-million people share R240 billion in South Africa through the South African Social Security Agency, and each of the had to pass the SASSA Means Test. So, what is it exactly, and how can you pass it to ensure you’re eliigible?

According to SGSC, to ensure you’re truly in need of financial aid and won’t be taking advantage of the system, you need to pass the SASSA Means Test. Doing so ensures you are financially disadvantaged to the point of needing a government grant. And that you’re not taking away pensions and grants from those who genuinely need them.

HOW TO PASS THE SASSA MEANS TEST

Essentially, the SASSA Means Test paints a picture of the applicant’s financial status. Specifically looking at their income, total assets, along with other financial factors. To pass the SASSA Means Test your income and assets must not be higher than a certain threshold. Beyond any other requirements, if you exceed these limits you will not be eligible to qualify for a government grant.

Remember that each grant type has a unique threshold to pass the SASSA Means Test. Older Persons, Disability and War Veteran’s grants are all paid on a sliding scale dependent on your private income. If you have a lot, your grant will be smaller. Assets and income of a married person are calculated collectively with their spouse’s, because that is what the household is bringing in financially.

MAXIMUM ASSET THRESHOLD FOR SASSA GRANTS

The reason for the inclusion of an asset threshold, is that some people may be below the income threshold but still have access to generational or other assets, which will preclude them from a government grant:
