After Samsung launched their Samsung Galaxy Fold earlier this month, Huawei has unveiled its first attempt at a folding smartphone at the Mobile World Conference. The Huawei Mate X is a pretty impressive piece of tech.

The excitement was felt in the air as T3 reported live from the Mobile World Congress 2019, or MWC2019 for short. They were able to get some play-time with the new Huawei Mate X.

When the launch of the Mate X was announced at the Mobile World Conference, Huawei CEO Richard Yu explained that it will represent a “voyage into the uncharted.” He added:

“As a new breed of smartphones, Huawei Mate X combines 5G, foldable screen, AI and an all-new mode of interfacing to provide consumers with an unprecedented user experience.”

Huawei Mate X: Specs and features

The Huawei Mate X will feature a 6.6-inch display on the front and a 6.3-inch display on the rear. The hinge under the folding screen will allow the phone to fold out to an impressive 8-inch tablet-like display.

By way of comparison, the Galaxy Fold opens up to to a 7.3-inch display in tablet configuration and a 4.6-inch as a normal front display.

The Mate X has also avoided adding a notch to the front display with the camera lenses at the back. The cameras will be able to take selfies, using the dual displays.

The Mate X will be the world’s fastest foldable phone

Huawei have included their 5G technology in the Mate X. According to them, that makes it the world’s first 5G foldable smartphone. The Mate X can handle download speeds up to 7.5 Gbps.

Just like the Galaxy Fold, the Mate X is a dual battery phone. The Mate X has a 4500 mAh battery. Thanks to its 55w fast-charging system, it can charge from flat to 85% in under half an hour.

From what we’ve seen so far with the Mobile World Conference feedback, the Huawei design seems to be neater and more functional than the Samsung offering. In addition, the Mate X will fold down to 10.9 mm in thickness. It will be 5.4 mm thick when folded out into the tablet shape.

As with all new technologies, Huawei have noted at the MWC2019 that the Mate X is not cheap to make at the moment. That translates into a €2 299 price tag (about R36 100). Remember, that will get you a phone with 8G RAM, 512GB storage and Kirin 980 processor model when it launches mid-2019.
