Caffeine and its potential health side effects

Tea and coffee are great hot beverages but most of them contain caffeine which in high quantities may have unfavourable or even harmful side effects.

One of the most popular drinks consumed worldwide is coffee. It is a caffeine-containing natural stimulant that can help raise alertness, uplift mood, and increase energy levels.

However, excessive coffee use can have adverse health effects, just like excessive use of any other substance. Let us look at three ways in which caffeine can impact our bodies:


Caffeine is known to make people feel more alert.

It functions by obstructing adenosine’s actions, a brain substance that causes fatigue. Adrenaline, the “fight-or-flight” hormone linked to enhanced energy, is released at the same time.

However, with greater doses, these effects could be more overt, resulting in jitteriness and anxiety.

Most people have been reported to experience anxiety, jitteriness, and similar symptoms at extremely high daily intakes of 1,000 mg or more, although caffeine-sensitive people may have the same symptoms with even a moderate intake.

It might be a good idea to examine your caffeine intake and reduce it if you find that you get anxious, tense, or jittery frequently.


Excessive caffeine consumption can make it challenging to achieve enough restorative sleep.

According to studies, consuming more caffeine seems to lengthen the time it takes to fall asleep. Additionally, it might make people sleep less on average, especially the elderly.

In contrast, persons who are regarded as “excellent sleepers” or even those who self-report having insomnia don’t appear to be much affected by low or moderate doses of coffee. If you underestimate how much caffeine you’re consuming, you might not be aware that it’s keeping you up at night.

Caffeine can get you addicted

No matter how healthy caffeine is, it has the potential to develop into an addiction.

Coffee triggers some brain chemicals in a way that is comparable to how cocaine and amphetamines do, but it does not lead to classic addiction in the same way that these substances do.

However, especially at high dosages, it may result in psychological or physical dependence.

Despite the fact that the substance does not appear to lead to actual addiction, there is a very significant risk that you will develop a dependence on its effects if you routinely consume large amounts of coffee or other caffeinated beverages.
