This week marks good news for SASSA SRD beneficiaries. Starting from today (Thursday 25 April 2024) and running till Monday 29 April 2024, SASSA SRD beneficiaries will receive an increase in their monthly grants. As stipulated by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana after the February 2024 budget speech, SASSA SRD beneficiaries will received R20 extra, pushing their Social Relief of Distress Grant to R370 from April 2024 onwards. This follows the South African Social Security Agency increase of grants across the board this month.

The R20 increase for cash-strapped SASSA SRD beneficiaries is the first since the grant’s introduction during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. While any amount of money is welcome to the millions of South Africans battling to make ends meet in the informal economy, civil rights organisations say it’s still not enough.

The cost of living and rising inflation in Mzansi is comfortably outpacing salary and grant increases. Simply put, this means your Rands and cents are worth less and less each month. This is why civil society argues the agency should reject the National Treasury’s meagre increases for SASSA SRD beneficiaries and demand more. If the African National Congress (ANC) truly values its ‘pro-poor policies’ it would increase SRD by R90. R440 per month to the 8.5-million SASSA SRD beneficiaries would account for inflation, say the organisations.
