There really aren’t man things as proudly South African as a thick-cut rump steak on the braai. If you are good friends with your local butcher, get them to cut a super thick rump steak so that you can make this rump steak and mushroom sauce on the braai this weekend for your family. It takes the rustic style of cooking an turns it into restaurant-quality food.

The mushroom sauce can be made on the braai too if you’ve got a cast-iron skillet. Making sure you’ve got a thick piece of steak at room temperature will help keep the steak nice and tender. Make sure your fire is super hot so that you can give the steak a good bit of colour on the outside while keeping it medium-rare on the inside, especially after resting.
