No dairy or eggs? Try the “Depression” cake.

During the American Great Depression, some pantry staples were not readily available. Some bakers relied on ingredient substitution to create adaptable recipes that retained flavour. The “Depression” or “wacky” cake is a dairy-free cake that doesn’t need milk, butter or even eggs.

The recipe is easy to make and ideal if you are allergic to dairy products. Enjoy!

Dairy-free, Egg-free Chocolate Cake Recipe. Easy to make, really simple yet very tasty.


  • 250 grams 250 flour

  • 6 tablespoons 6 vegetable oil

  • 1 cup 1 sugar

  • 1 teaspoon 1 baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon 1 salt

  • 1 teaspoon 1 white/apple cider vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon 1 vanilla essence

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 cup 1 cold coffee or water


  • Mix all ingredients together.
  • Bake for 35 minutes at 190 degrees until all set and springy.
