February 2024 SASSA Disability Grants are the next in the queue for disbursement. The South African Social Security Agency already processed Old-age Pension Grants last Friday (2 February 2024). This means the next disbursement will be for Disability Grants tomorrow (Monday 5 February 2024), and Children’s Grants on Tuesday 6 February 2024.

A government disability grant applies to anyone with physical or mental impairments that keep them from working for six months or longer. If you suffer from a mental disability or have been injured on the job and are physically incapacitated, here’s how you go about securing your rightful SASSA Disability Grant.

The South African Government website breaks disabilities into two kinds: temporary and permanent. Temporary is if you are unable to work for a period of time between six months and one year. Permanent disability applies if you will be unable to work for one year or longer.

In 2023, more than 1 035 000 people benefited from the SASSA Disability Grant payouts. The government grant is worth R2 090 per month, and to qualify you must undergo a medical examination with a state-appointed doctor. They will assess the degree and severity of your disability. You may supply previous medical records/reports for the assessment.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

  • You must be living in South Africa.
  • Older than 18- and younger than 59-years of age.
  • Not be in a state institution.
  • Have a valid 13-digit, bar-coded identity document (ID)
  • The earning threshold is R86 280 annually if single and R172 560 if married.
  • Your net assets cannot exceed R1 227 600 if single or R2 455 200 if married.

Disability grants take up to three months to payout from the time of application. But don’t worry, if and when you are approved, you will be back-paid from the day you applied. There is also something called Grant-in-Aid. This stipend is aimed at existing grant holders who require full-time care at home. The money allows the hiring of full-time care services.

APRIL INCREASE EXPECTED

It currently pays out R510 and while this was not increased in October 2023, it is likely to increase on 1 April 2024 by R10. To receive the above you must already be a primary grant recipient due to mental or physical disability.
