The selling of dirty diesel in South Africa is no joke. Sub-standard or contaminated fuel is a big reason why some of the latest and best combustion-engine technologies don’t come to South Africa. Vehicle manufacturers are all too aware of South Africa’s poor-fuel problem and simply don’t retail certain cars here as a result.

Now, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has undertaken a deep dive into dirty diesel in South Africa, with startling results. According to TopAuto, 70 filling stations across the country have been caught red-handed selling contaminated diesel (but that’s by no means all of them).

More often than not, dirty diesel in South Africa comes watered down with illuminating paraffin. The latter is not subjected to the usual taxes and levies applied to South African fuel and, unlike petrol, the stipulated diesel price is only wholesale and therefore not regulated.

Filling stations set their own prices in order to undercut the competition and draw in customers. And they’re not averse to ‘watering’ down the mixture with paraffin either to further boost profits. The DMRE’s investigation ran from April to December 2023.

The voluntary fuel-testing laboratories noted an increase of up to 38% in consumers voluntarily submitting diesel samples for testing in 2023. Using fuel other than what the manufacturer stipulates can have long-term detrimental effects on your vehicle’s internals and lead to costly repairs.

  • Limpopo – 15 stations
  • North West – 13 stations
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 13 stations
  • Mpumalanga – 9 stations
  • Northern Cape – 6 stations
  • Gauteng – 5 stations
  • Western Cape – 4 stations
  • Free State – 4 stations
  • Eastern Cape – 1 station

Best of all, fuel stations caught selling dirty diesel in South Africa are in fact non-compliant with SARS and will be prosecuted under laws of tax evasion, said the DMRE.
