Johannesburg is buzzing with the debut of Comic-Con Africa on Friday. Scores of gamers and comic book enthusiasts have all gathered at the Kyalami Grand Prix and International Convention Centre.

The globally-famous event will carry on throughout the weekend, and as much as it is exciting that fans will have the change to meet their favourite heroes, many were disappointed by the news of a few key withdrawals.

Marvel-DC characters that have withdrawn from Comic-Con Africa

The first known DC hero to withdraw from the event was DC Comics’ Aquaman, who is played by Jason Momoa. The superhero has his origin film slated for a cinematic release soon.

Obviously, those who are waiting for the movie purchased tickets to the event. However, to their disappointment, Aquaman is dealing with Hurricane Florence at the moment.

The second hero to step down from his Comic-Con Africa duties was Falcon, the Marvel character played by Anthony Mackie.

On Thursday, the organisers of the event issued a statement, announcing the withdrawal.

“Anthony Mackie has had to withdraw his participation from Comic-Con Africa due to Hurricane Florence.

Hurricane Florence, a category 4 hurricane, has been approaching the Southeast Coast of the United States of America and has resulted in over 1 million people being evacuated and thousands of flights delayed and cancelled. It is due to this that Anthony is unable to travel to South Africa for Comic-Con Africa.”

The other withdrawal was from Star Trek’s Ricky Worthy. As sad as this news is, we can’t help but feel the sympathy for the superstars, who are dealing with the damage that was caused by Hurricane Florence.
