In celebration of Charlize Theron’s 43rd birthday on 7 August, here are her top 10 performances, spanning over 23 years when she made her film debut in an uncredited role as a follower of a cult in the 1995 horror film Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest.

  1. Monster (2003)

The South African born actress received an Academy Award for best actress for her role in Monster, where she portrays Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute who was executed in Florida in 2002 for murdering six men.

2. The Italian Job (2003)

This is seen as Theron’s first big smash. In the film, Theron acquits herself nicely as one of the guys in a heist film alongside Mark Wahlberg, Jason Statham, and Mos Def.

3. Atomic Blonde (2017)

While Theron initially proved herself an action star in Aeon Flux, she stepped it up in Atomic Blonde in 2017 when she played an MI6 spy sent to Berlin at the end of the Cold War, battling myriad KGB agents while cautiously teaming up with a conniving station agent (James McAvoy).

According to Vulture, Theron has the right combination of grit, athleticism, swagger, and carefully concealed vulnerability in Atomic Blonde, and she executes the next-level fight scenes with effortless panache — even when her character is getting the crap beaten out of her.

4. Young Adult (2011)

Young Adult is about a stumbling, self-pitying woman called Marvis who decides on a whim to go to her high-school reunion in the deluded belief that she can win back her old flame Buddy (Patrick Wilson), even though he’s now happily married with a newborn baby. Theron’s role as Marvis also earned her a Golden Globe nomination for best actress.

5. North Country (2005)

This film also got Theron an Oscar nomination for best actress. In North Country, Theron stars as Josey, a blue-collar wife, and mother who’s just fled her abusive husband – only to wind up working in a mine where the men casually debase her and her female cohorts.

6. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Years after the collapse of civilization, the tyrannical Immortan Joe enslaves apocalypse survivors inside the desert fortress the Citadel. When the warrior Imperator Furiosa (Theron) leads the despot’s five wives in a daring escape, she forges an alliance with Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), a loner and former captive. Fortified in the massive, armored truck the War Rig, they try to outrun the ruthless warlord and his henchmen in a deadly high-speed chase through the Wasteland.

7. Tully (2018)

Tully puts Theron front and center, in all her glory and fearsomeness, as a scared, angry, confused and utterly exhausted new mother. She gets no help from her husband, her children, her old friends or the fancy school she’s struggling to pay for, so she finds it the most unlikely of places: A 26-year-old nanny named Tully (Mackenzie Davis) who seems to know her better than anyone else.

“Theron captures the utter despair of being a new mother in a way that will feel revolutionary to anyone who has been there, but she also perfectly rides the line of being on top of everything for everyone while still slowly losing her mind. And on top of all her other skills, Theron proves herself the master of the reaction-shot eye-roll here.”

8. Mighty Joe Young (1998)

As a child living in Africa, Jill Young (Theron) saw her mother killed while protecting wild gorillas from poachers. Now an adult, Jill cares for an orphaned gorilla named Joe, who, due to a genetic anomaly, is 15 feet tall. Some say you haven’t made it until you’ve acted against a green screen in Hollywood, and Theron got the full gorilla in this classic.

“She doesn’t quite reach Naomi Watts’s fully realized performance in King Kong, but she’s close: Warm, fierce and funny, she showed a light touch that many might not have expected of her just yet. The movie wasn’t a hit, but she was clearly showing she could be a star in anything.”

9. The Devil’s Advocate (1997)

Supernatural forces hover over the courtroom in this devilish drama adapted from the novel by Andrew Neiderman. Attorney Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves) doesn’t heed the Bible-based warnings of his mother (Judith Ivey), who views New York City as “the dwelling place of demons.” Instead, he leaves Gainesville, Florida, with his wife Mary Ann (Theron) to put his legalistic skills to the test at a leading Manhattan law firm run by John Milton (Al Pacino).

Theron didn’t have a lot of acting experience on her resume at the time, but took on the demanding and complex role of a culture-shocked housewife who also happens to be mentally tormented by the devil himself.

10. A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Theron proves her sharp-shooting comedy skills in this film, elevating Seth MacFarlane’s uneven western spoof as the captive trophy wife of Liam Neeson’s sadistic outlaw, who also becomes the romantic interest of MacFarlane’s hapless cowboy anti-hero.
