LAURA WOLVAARDT: THE BEGINNING

Laura Wolvaardt was born on 26 April 1999, in Milnerton, Western Cape, South Africa according to CricketerBio. At such a young age she’s already an integral part of the South Africa National Cricket Team.

Her prowess as a right-handed batsman has elevated her to not just a national treasure. She is also a force to be reckoned with within domestic cricket. Laura Wolvaardt has played for Western Province, Adelaide Strikers, Northern Superchargers, and Brisbane Heat.

Most recently, she graced the field for Gujrat Giants in the 2023 Women’s Premier League in India.

LAURA’S CRICKET JOURNEY

Laura’s cricket journey began at a tender age, with her debut for the Western Province U-19 girls’ team at just 13 years old. Talk about a prodigy! Her senior team debut followed in October 2013 in a Twenty20 match against Boland women.

Laura Wolvaardt’s meteoric rise continued as she was invited to captain the South Africa Under-19 cricket team while still in high school.

BATTING PRODIGY

In 2016, at the tender age of 16, Laura Wolvaardt made her Women One Day International (WODI) debut in South Africa. She opened up against England Women and has also shown her prowess in the shortest format of the game. This was during her Women’s T20 debut for South Africa in 2016 against Ireland.

Laura became the youngest player, male or female, to score a century for South Africa in international cricket when she achieved this feat against Ireland at just 17 years old in August 2016. In 2017, she earned the title of Newcomer of the Year at the Cricket South Africa Awards.

CRICKET AWARDS

In March 2018, Laura Wolvaardt was among the select few players to receive a national contract from Cricket South Africa for the 2018-19 season. She continued to shine, being named South Africa’s Women’s Cricketer of the Year at Cricket South Africa’s annual awards ceremony in July 2020.

Laura’s outstanding performances earned her a spot in the ICC Women’s T20I Team of the Year at the 2021 ICC Awards. With 64 international matches under her belt in both WT20I and WODI formats, Laura’s star continues to rise.

Though she didn’t get a chance to play, Laura received her Test cap for South Africa against England on June 27, 2022. Laura played her last Women One Day International (WODI) match for South Africa against England on 18 July 2022. In February 2023, she made her Women’s T20 International (WT20I) debut for South Africa against Australia.
