Prince Harry may have to drop royal title to become US citizen

To become a US citizen, the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry may have to renounce his royal title, according to US citizenship laws and regulations.

‘AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP HAS CROSSED MY MIND’

In an interview with Good Morning America on Friday, 16 February, Prince Harry shared that he “has considered” getting American citizenship. Despite considering American citizenship, Harry also reiterated that it’s not a priority for him now.

“The American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind but is certainly not something that is a high priority for me right now”, Harry shared.

When asked why this is not a priority for him now, shared that he had “no idea” and then referenced the 2025 preparations for the Invictus Winter Games in Canada, “I’m here standing next to these guys”.

PRINCE HARRY MIGHT HAVE TO DROP ROYAL TITLE FOR US CITIZENSHIP

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle moved to California in 2020 when they stepped down from their senior royal duties.

According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) notes a policy on their site called “Renunciation of Title or Order of Nobility” that may require the Duke of Sussex to no longer be referenced as such.

“Any applicant who has any titles of heredity or positions of nobility in any foreign state must renounce the title or the position,” per the policy, listed under “Oath of Allegiance” to the United States.

As reported by Page Six, “the applicant must expressly renounce the title in a public ceremony and USCIS must record the renunciation as part of the proceedings”.
