Royal coronation: Everything we know about the iconic flypast

The royal family will appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the flypast to wrap up the coronation proceedings. Here’s what we know.

On Saturday, 6 May, all eyes will be on the UK for King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla’s coronation at Westminster Abbey. After the service and procession back to Buckingham Palace, the King will appear on the palace balcony for the iconic flypast. Here is what we know.

EVERYTHING WE KNOW ABOUT THE CORONATION FLYPAST

To conclude the official coronation proceedings, King Charles, Queen Camilla, and working members of the royal family will appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the flypast.

According to The Sun, flypasts are usually done in conjunction with Royal or state events such as anniversaries, celebrations, funerals, and memorials.

It is done as an aerial salute to show respect and display aircraft and skills.

The coronation flypast will take place over The Mall and Buckingham Palace, the publication reports.

More than 60 aircraft are expected to participate in the six-minute display, the publication reports.

Aircraft will reportedly include the Red Arrows, historic spitfires, and a 16-aircraft helicopter formation.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace says viewers can expect a “spectacular.”

WEATHER CONCERNS COULD DAMPEN THE SPIRITS

According to The Mirror, the coronation flypast is at risk of being canceled. Bad weather is reportedly predicted for the weekend.

Bad weather conditions could impact safety, and the flypast may need to be modified or canceled.

The publication reports a decision about canceling the flypast will only be made shortly before it is due to start. 

Rain is expected in the afternoon. It is perhaps a good omen as it also rained on the late Queen Elizabeth’s coronation.

Because of the coronation celebrations, flight restrictions will be imposed on light aircraft and drones above London on Friday and Saturday.
