Media mogul Oprah Winfrey has been back in the headlines over the last few days thanks to her high-profile interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. The explosive interview, which aired in the United States on Sunday, almost broke the internet due to the high volume of chatter that followed.

After airing locally a day later, viewers started to wonder if there was anyone in South Africa who could rival Oprah’s ability to conduct the dream interview.

Pearl Thusi and Anele Mdoda could rival Oprah, fans reckon

In the hours that followed the screening, actress Pearl Thusi, talk-show host Anele Mdoda and television legend Noeleen Maholwana Sangqu started to trend online.

Many South Africans seem to think these women would be ideally suited to host the most high-profile of interviews in South Africa.

Although Pearl Thusi seemed to be the clear favourite, the actress has been plagued by some bad publicity lately, with social media users saying she had a tendency to make interviews about herself.

To her credit, the Queen Sono star has owned her bad press, admitting she can be “messy, problematic, confusing etc”, but added fans should note that she was only human.

Pearl Thusi One Of SA’s Hardest-Working Stars

Born in the Durban township of KwaNdengezi in 1988, Sithembile Xola Pearl Thusi has been of the hardest-working stars in South Africa from a very young age — first as a drum major and then in local pageants. After being the runner-up in the 2003 Miss Teen South Africa pageant, she was able to book modelling gigs and roles in commercials.

Her star has been on the rise ever since, with appearances in the series Zone 14, the BBC drama The No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency and soap opera Isidingo.

Pearl’s breakout role: ‘Quantico’

Pearl Thusi’s breakout role came by way of Quantico, an American drama series that aired on ABC from 2015 to 2018. Starring alongside Priyanka Chopra, she joined the cast as human rights lawyer Dayana Mampasi during the show’s second season.

This led to a leading role in the rom-com Catching Feelings and the critically acclaimed Netflix series, Queen Sono.

With such vast experience in the entertainment industry, Pearl Thusi just might be ready to take on the role of South Africa’s very own Oprah Winfrey — even if some fans don’t agree.
