Many social media users have wondered how she was managing to fund the trip — a question which was answered by an X user who revealed that she actually gets paid to support SA sports teams.

A fact that was confirmed by IOL who reported that her trip to France this year was in fact sponsored by the Department of Sport and the SA Rugby Union.

“I was today years old when I found out that these two are paid by the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture to go and be supporters in the stands. I’m not joking, they are paid by taxpayers to go to sporting events across the world to “represent” South Africa,” he wrote about Mama Joy and Botha.

Worth the taxpayers cash?

In the comment section, social media users shared their thoughts on whether or not taxpayers should be forking out money on super fans.

Others however argued that Mama Joy is well worth the money considering how much she brightens up the stadium in support of the country’s national teams.

“Well, they ARE great brand ambassadors for sure! The fact that we did not know come as a nasty surprise though…” one person wrote while another added:

“I have known Mama Joy and Botha for as long as I’ve been a sports fan. Anyone taking offense at this is simply insulting them silently. Mama Joy has always showed up for every SA sport. I met her at OR Tambo on a school trip when she was welcoming the Olympics team in 2012.”

“My taxes are being well spent for these 2 patriotic great decision by the Dpt of Arts & Culture…Mama Joy & Botha are esteemed South Africans they represent me and my community very well.”
