Without naming them, Minister of Police Bheki Cele has reportedly expressed his fear of KwaZulu-Natal’s Gcaba brothers, one of whom was named as an alleged paymaster in the murder of rapper AKA.

In an old clip that has recently surfaced, Cele spoke about “known men who run the transport industry” in the province. The notorious family  – who are related to former president Jacob Zuma – are known for ruthlessly running a taxi business empire.

According to the Sowetan, the state alleges one of the brothers – Sydney – paid close to a million rand to seven men to orchestrate a hit on the muso last year.

This week, South Africans were shocked after the National Prosecuting Authority claimed that one of the Gcaba brothers – Sydney – transferred more than R800 00 to the “coordinator” of the hit on AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes.

The claims were heard in the Durban Magistrates Court, where five of the seven men are on trial for the murder of the rapper and celebrity chef friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane.

They are Lindokuhle Mkhwanazi, Siyanda Myeza, Mziwethemba Gwabeni, and brothers Lindani Ndimande and Lindokuhle Ndimande. Two other men, also siblings Siyabonga and Malusi Ndimande, are in Eswatini. They are currently in the process of being extradited.

The men are charged with conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of murder, five counts of attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and money laundering.

According to EWN, Sydney Mfundo Gcaba allegedly paid the money via the business bank account of Bright Circle Pty Ltd, a company of which he is the sole director.

The publication adds that state prosecutor Advocate Elvis Gcweka alleges cellphone records also revealed a call between Gcaba and one of the accused, Gwabeni.

He said: “Shortly after this call, an amount of R803,455 is transferred into the bank account of the applicant.”

The money was split between all seven men.

Following the bombshell allegations, South Africans expressed their shock that one of the notorious Gcaba brothers is behind the murders of AKA and Tibz.

Sydney and siblings Mandla, Roma, and Sthembiso are the nephews of former president Jacob Zuma and live in Nkandla. The brothers have gained a reputation for dominating the taxi industry in KZN.

In a video posted on social media, tweeps believe that the Minister of Police Bheki Cele expressed his fear of the siblings. He also hinted that one of the brothers tried to intimidate his rival with an entourage of 12 armed men.

The minister’s comments were made in the Frank Dialogue discussion about the mafia in KZN in December 2023

Without revealing their identity, he said: “You know their name…I’m also scared.”

However, several media outlets allege that Bheki Cele and the Gcaba brothers are on familiar terms.

According to AmaBhungane, the minister is an alleged “ally” to the Gcaba taxi family, who have “benefited from Durban contracts in housing and transport.”

Sunday Independent claims the eldest Gcaba brother, Mandla, was awarded close to R1 million as a transport consultant for a police day event in 2011. The publication claims that the world “could have been done for free by the police supply chain management.”

At the time, Cele was the National Commissioner of the SAPS.
