Last week, the South African Police Service confirmed that six suspects were arrested in connection with the murder of rapper AKA and his friend Tibz.

The two died on 10 February 2023 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Barely a year after their deaths, the police gave a huge update on the high-profile case.

AKA’S MURDER SUSPECTS PAID HOURS BEFORE THE HIT

KwaZulu-Natal SAPS Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi confirmed the news with a media briefing.

Seven suspects are now in police custody in connection to their deaths. With the case before the courts, new reports have emerged as Mzansi tries to connect the dots about who paid the six suspects to kill AKA and Tibz.

Confirmed reports have that the coordinator, ‘the master of everything,’ assembled and paid the suspects. The six had different roles, from spotters to a get-away vehicle coordinator. The roles included two shooters, two spotters, a coordinator, and the organiser of firearms and vehicles.

Sunday World revealed that the alleged R800 000 was deposited into Mziwethebma Harvey Gwabeni’s First National Bank (FNB) account. It was paid hours before AKA’s death on 10 February 2023. Sunday World reports that the alleged suspects visited Gwabeni’s house that day.

However, details of the account that deposited the money into Gwabeni’s account are still unknown. Eswatini media reported that there is transactional evidence of the payments. The exact amounts disbursed to the six suspects are unknown.

Despite the new reports, the police are yet to disclose who paid AKA’s murder suspects.

FIRST COURT APPEARANCE

Against the arrests, five of the seven suspects appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 29 February. The other two are still in custody in Eswatini. Their extradition process started soon after their arrest.

During their first court appearance, the magistrate postponed the matter for bail verification until 6 March.
