The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced that journalist Stephen Grootes has resigned from SAFM in a statement on Tuesday 2 July.

STEPHEN GROOTES RESIGNS FROM SAFM

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced that veteran journalist Stephen Grootes has resigned from SAFM to pursue another venture. Stephen’s last show on SAFM will be on 31 July, after six years. He will then be heading back to his roots – by rejoining Primedia Broadcasting for the Money Show on 702 and CapeTalk. This was where his journey began.

“The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) regrets to inform SAFM listeners and clients about the imminent departure of Stephen Grootes from the station at the end of July 2024, to pursue a new career opportunity,” read the statement.

“SABC Radio management thanks him for his loyal service and impeccable work ethic and wishes him well in his future endeavours. A new presenter for ‘SAfm Sunrise’ will be announced in due course,” read the statement.

As per the statement, Stephens said that speaking to the nation every morning was an honour and he will deeply miss the Sunrise team, listeners and callers.

“It has been the honour of my professional life to speak to the entire nation every morning over the last six years, and I have learnt an incredible amount from presenting SAfm Sunrise. I will deeply miss the Sunrise team, our listeners and particularly our callers,” said Stephen according to the statement.

THE JOURNALIST ON LEAVING SAFM: ‘I’M SAD TO BE LEAVING’

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Stephens went on to say that he is sad to be leaving.

“I’m honoured to have had the chance to present #SAfmSunrise for over six years and I’m sad to be leaving. @safmradio. It’s been the most incredible privilege to speak to the nation every morning and to be a part of the national debate,” he wrote.
