‘Give us another holiday. Usebenzile Umfana’ – South Africans after Dricus du Plessis’ win

Dricus du Plessis defeated Sean Strickland by a split decision during their UFC middleweight title fight in Toronto, Canada.

The win has since thrust Dricus into the top trends, with many flooding social media with congratulatory messages.

MAKING HISTORY

However, the win also saw Dricus go down in history books as the first South African UFC title holder. Two of the three judges awarded Du Plessis 48-47 scorecards, with the third giving Strickland the edge by a similar margin.

His win also saw him pocketing R930 000 in bonuses. Against the win, he called out Israel Adesanya, and many were more than convinced that this might be his first title defence.

Back home, fans have flooded social media to celebrate his win. President Cyril Ramaphosa has since been implicated in the mix, with many calling for a public holiday to celebrate his win.

No doubt, in recent years, several countries have made it a norm to issue public holidays to celebrate such achievements. South Africa hasn’t been spared from the global trend.

SOUTH AFRICANS REACT TO DRICUS DU PLESSIS’ WIN

Over the years, the government has issued public holidays for such significant achievements, with the Springboks Rugby World Cup win being the most recent. Fans flooded social media with their two cents in the backdrop of Dricus du Plessis’ win.
