Legendary gospel musician Reverend Benjamin Dube and his Spirit of Praise choir members have been lambasted on social media for a gesture they deemed harmless.

Rev Dube and the award-winning music ensemble were on a flight to Durban when they broke out in song before disembarking.

In a TikTok video shared by Omega Khunou – one of the lead singers in the choir – the choir can be heard singing along to Ayanda Ntanzi’s hit song Moya Oyingcwele which features on the Spirit of Praise Vol.9 album released in September.

The clip of the mini praise and worship session also shows some passengers taking videos, others clapping and ululating, while others looked like they were just minding their business.

X USERS NOT IMPRESSED

When the video was shared on X (formerly Twitter), it received mixed reactions.

However, it appeared that a large number of netizens were not happy with Rev Dube and crew as they felt they were “inconsedrate” of those who are not Christian.

“So annoying. Why do people feel entitled to infringe on others like this? They must charter a plane if they want to praise and worship onboard. The entitlement is nauseating.”

“I’m a Christian but the boring thing about Christians is that they don’t respect other people’s beliefs. They think they are the only God’s favourite. This is nonsense!!!”

“Learn to respect other people regardless of your faith or excitement. We all have our way of worship and prayer. Sing and pray at church /home. Now other people are uncomfortable and y’all gaslight them or call them demons and sht. Stop it!”

While Kaya FM breakfast co-host, Sol Phenduka, said: “Just because it’s Gospel it doesn’t make this right . Some people legit need to rest on the flight , others want to sleep , others want to read or enjoy other music on their headphones. Not cool !!!!!”

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, marketing manager Matthew Nkabinde said the video was shot in September and none of the passengers expressed any grievances.

“The plane had just touched down in Durban and they were about to disembark so they started singing. While there might be backlash on one social platform, there was no backlash. The video on Tik Tok is doing very well.”
