Mpho Sebeng tributes: Netflix, Showmax mourn young actor

‘What a fine young man. What a talent. What a dedicated thespian’: Mpho Sebeng’s passing has sent shockwaves through the industry.

Messages of condolences have been pouring in since the news of Ring of Lies star Mpho Sebeng’s passing.

The 31-year-old multi-talented media personality lost his life in a car crash on Sunday, 5 May, in Potchefstroom, North West.

TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR MPHO SEBENG

Fans, colleagues and friends have been paying tribute to the actor – who had roles on the Netflix film, Collision, as well as in the giant streaming platform’s series; Savage Beauty, The Brave Ones and Miseducation.

“A life well lived. Rest in peace, Mpho Sebeng,” Netflix wrote.

On Showmax, he starred in films Tshepo and The Jake’s Are Missing.

“An incredible legacy left behind. An undeniable talent. Rest in peace, Mpho Sebeng,” Showmax wrote.

Veteran actress Flo Masebe, who shared the screen with him on Ring of Lies, described him as a “fine young man”.

“What a fine young man. What a talent. What a dedicated thespian. Sending love and prayers to the Sebeng family and all Mpho’s loved ones.”

FAMILY ASKS FOR PRAYERS

In a statement shared on social media, the Sebeng family requested for some space it it deals with the heartbreaking news.

“The family of the South Africa entertainer, Mpho Sebeng are saddened to confirm, to the public and media that their son has indeed passed away.

“Mpho met his untimely death in the early hours of Sunday, 05 May 2024 due to a tragic car accident in Potchefstroom.

“Whilst the family appreciates the immense outpouring of love and condolences, the family requests some space to process the news,” read the statement.

The Sebeng family further said that details of the much-loved actor’s memorial and funeral services will be communicated in due course.

“We request that you continue to hold the Sebeng family in prayer. Take care of yourselves and take care of each other.”

Fellow actor and Sebeng’s close friend, Zola Hashatsi, told The Citizen that the actor was his family’s pride.

“It is a difficult time for the family right now. Of course, this is still fresh.

“They loved him very much and were proud of him,” he explained.

Hashatsi revealed the tragedy came as friends were getting ready to celebrate Sebeng’s purchase of a new apartment in Randburg.

“He was a great colleague. When he came to Craze I knew this was someone who was absolutely talented and never saw himself as above anyone else. He was great at what he did”.

“I was six years older than him. I was not only his friend, I was his older brother.”
