South Africans have once again been left highly either inspired or simply annoyed by local politician Julius Malema over his thoughts about the Springboks. On Sunday evening, the Economic Freedom Fighter leader tweeted that the Springboks should be given a new name, colour, and emblem that represents the country’s democracy. Once again taking to X, he shared a video of a group of white people enjoying drinks and wearing the Springbok colours, singing Bok van Blerg’s controversial hit song De la Ray.

This did not sit well with some social media users who have called Malema a hypocrite for fighting to chant the struggle song Kill The Boer and now taking issue with whites singing De la Ray.

EFF leader Julius Malema is not well known to keep his composure and control his emotions.

In fact, he has a reputation for speaking his mind — often as loudly and as crass as humanly possible.

This weekend he went viral after tweeting that the South African rugby team, the Springboks, “must fall”.

According to Malema, who earlier referred to rugby as a white person sport, the rugby team needs new colours, a new name and a new emblem.

“MALEMA: THE SPRINGBOK MUST FALL. That National Team – we will get it a new name, and the new colours, and the new Emblem, which will represent our democracy,” he wrote.

When this sparked outrage online, Malema shared a video of white Springbok supporters singing Afrikaans song De la Ray.

“Stronger together rubbish, go on sucking up to white supremacy and don’t count me in your nonsense. At least they don’t pretend; they are obvious with their racism, and you are desperately seeking their approval and inclusion,” he captioned the video.

In the early 2000s the song sparked outrage among some who argued that it may incite white on black violence.

In fact, the department of arts and culture denounced the song, saying it could be interpreted as a call to arms.

Bok van Blerg at the time argued that the song was about the Boer struggle against Britain and not at all to do with apartheid.

“But it’s OK when you sing Kill the boer If the #StrongerTogether movement is showing you flames I wonder what will elections do to you,” one person said while another added:

“The man who chanted “Kill the Boer” is offended by an ode to an Anglo-Boer War general. It doesn’t make sense.”
