On Sunday, 24 February, former South African president Jacob Zuma delivered a speech at his uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) manifesto. The speech, filled with his ideas for SA should the party win, also addressed the LGBTQ+ community.

According to Zuma, same sex marriages will not be allowed under his ruling. He also added how these marriages are a “disgrace.”

His comments have been met with varied reactions from social media users. And now a video of the former president laughing with famous gay media personality Somizi Mhlongo has resurfuced online and left tongues wagging.

Zuma’s anti-gay remarks sparks outrage

Jacob Zuma’s anti-gay speech ruffled quite a few feathers last week.

Zuma, who was speaking at Maqongqo near Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, delivered the speech at his new party MKP’s manifesto.

According to the 81-year-old, under his rule as MK’s president, there will be no more same-sex marriage or relationships.

“Who made the law that a man can date another man? Who will women be left with?”

The controversial ex-president also called same-sex relationships a disgrace.

What about Somizi?

Since then, a video of Zuma and former Idols SA judge Somizi Mhlongo looking as thick as thieves has been shared online.

In the clip, Zuma appears to have no problem with Mhlongo who is a well-known member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Naturally, the clip caused quite a buzz among confused South Africans who wonder how Zuma — who clearly has no qualms with Mhlongo — could be against same-sex marriages.

“Former president Jacob Zuma has just asked the growing LGBTQIA+ community to not vote for the MK Party. Don’t even ask why would he do that to Somizi & his followers because he’s a ‘chess player’,” commented one user.
