MANDELA’S ITEMS TO BE AUCTIONED OFF IN FEBRUARY

Makaziwe Mandela, who is Madiba’s eldest daughter, was given the greenlight, by the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, to proceed with the sale of the 29 items that the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) did not want auctioned.

In total, 70 items will be auctioned off on 22 February this year by Guernsey’s auction house in New York.

Some of the items include Mandela’s letters from prison, drawings he sketched while in jail, 10 of his famous signature shirts, his walking stick, a gift from former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, as well as his ID book issued in 1993.

The estimated collective value of the 70 items to be between $2 million (R38 million) and $3 million (R56 million). In addition, proceeds from the auction are intended to finance a memorial garden honoring Mandela.

SOUTH AFRICANS SLAMS THE DECISION

Netizens have come out to condemn the act by Makaziwe, as one accused her of disregarding Mandela’s legacy.

“We really need a i blew it episode for mandela’s, because blowing generational wealth in less than 3 decades is Insane,” said one X user.

Award-winning international broadcaster, Redi Tlhabi, said: “Mmmm..This is THE Nelson Mandela. I’m surprised one has to auction any of his things to raise money to memorialise him. I can think of at least 20 people internationally who would donate to that initiative. These treasures of statesmen live in museums.. Their history is priceless.”

“Selling an ID is the worst form of hood bankruptcy I’ve ever seen,” said another X user.

“She definitely has absolutely NO care for his legacy, but her own selfish ends. Surely, the memorial garden can’t be thaaaaaat significant so much so that all other avenues to raise funds are exhausted & you have to sell your dad’s ID. Khohlakele!” another netizens said.
