Gayton McKenzie has vowed not to be another “fat cat” politician after his appointment as Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture.

In fact, the former convict has pledged to lose weight in a bid to take his new role seriously.

McKenzie, who was initially hoping to secure a role as a minister in the departments of home affairs or police, was sworn in on Wednesday, 2 July.

GAYTON MCKENZIE VOWS TO LOSE WEIGHT

Despite the shock of his appointment, Gayton McKenzie has pledged to hit the ground running as Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture.

When an X user challenged him to take up fitness, Gayton responded: “I did my first run from the parking lot to the airport gate because I was late this morning. I promise to join @tumisole  & friends from next week will run every day.”

He added: “You can’t have such an overweight Minister of Sports, Arts & Culture. I must look like my job”.

In 2019, Gayton went on a 90-day fitness challenge and lost a significant amount of weight.

In the comments section, many of Gayton’s followers praised him for being a “progressive” minister.

@chinyani_simba: “I like the attitude of leading by example!”

@Princymthombeni: “Your passion and energy are commendable, Minister. I hope the change in your department matches the excitement we see here on X.”

@Layne_JazzeySA: “Encouraging good health is what’s needed. People should shed unnecessary fats and live a healthy life.”

JOKES ABOUT TIME IN JAIL

Meanwhile, Gayton McKenzie had the cabinet, including President Cyril Ramaphosa and Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, in stitches during his swearing-in ceremony.

Gayton poked fun at Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe, who fumbled over his promise to “divulge state secrets.”

He also joked at Zondo’s instructions.

“The last time a judge told me to sit, he made me sit for ten years.”

Gayton is referring to his decade in Grootvlei Prison for armed robbery.

He told Power FM in 2017 about his life experience: “I robbed my first bank just before I turned 16. Then I was a fully-fledged gangster. I was one of the most wanted guys. I spent my whole youth in jail after being sentenced to 17 years”.

In jail, Gayton decided to turn his life around after he witnessed the brutal rape of an underage prisoner.

The account eventually led him to become one of the “Grootvlei Four” who exposed widespread corruption at the Bloemfontein prison.
