Despite being one of the highest-paid South African footballers Lebo Mothiba is unpopular back home. Over the years, many have been trying to connect the dots about his career, which has often thrust him into top trends.

Despite being dubbed one of the next big stars from South Africa, the star’s career went south, leaving many wondering about the former Mamelodi Sundowns’ wonderkid whereabouts.

A CAREER MARRED WITH INJURY WOES

Lebo Mothiba was born on 28 January 1996 in Johannesburg. The 27-year-old striker had his youth career with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2007 before leaving in 2009 for Diambars Academy.

In 2014, he joined Lille’s youth academy before switching the floor to the reverse team in 2015. His unmatched flair saw him joining the senior team in 2017. However, Lebo Mothiba was later loaned to several clubs before settling with Strasbourg in 2018.

His career has been marred with career-threatening injuries. He had two knee injuries that left him on the sidelines for months. He has vowed to bounce back stronger. Against his return, his salary has often seen him making headlines back home.

During Stuart Baxter’s tenure as Bafana coach, Mothiba featured 14 times for the national team, scoring four goals between 2018-19. Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba made his return to the national team against Namibia after he was included in the squad with Hugo Broos.

FORMER SUNDOWNS YOUTH PLAYER EARNING R14 MILLION SALARY

Lebo Mothiba is arguably the third highest-paid South African footballer. The 27-year-old plays for Ligue 1 outfit RC Strasbourg. His annual earnings are estimated to be around R14 million, plus bonuses and incentives.

Despite a big salary, he has been struggling at goal, and this season, he has netted three goals from ten appearances.
