The Springboks’ Trophy Tour is well on its way as the world rugby champions visit several cities across South Africa to parade the trophy. Captain, Siyamthanda Kolisi has been front and centre of the celebrations, prompting many South Africans to reflect on his impressive and inspiring 5-year reign as captain.

One person who put themselves in the mix is former Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula who came out to say that he deserves the credit for Kolisi being elected as captain back in 2018.

Mbalula has held a number of positions as a cabinet member in South African leadership. Between 2010 – 2017, he held the title of Minister of Sports and during this time oversaw the fall of the existing quota system and introduced a new transformation charter that would make South African sport more inclusive.

A year after Mbalula’s reign ended, Springboks coach, Rassie Erasmus, named Kolisi as his captain. Mbalula believes his efforts in cabinet led to this historic decision which eventually saw Kolisi lead the country to two back-to-back world cups. Mbalula said, “It’s not Rassie who did away with quotas its [sic] me bcos they were counter productive, We entrenched the transformation charter hence you see Siya been the captain.”

Not everybody believes that Fikile Mbalula’s efforts as Minister of Sports directly correlated with Kolisi earning his captaincy. Upon reading Mbalula’s words, critics on social media quickly condemned the ANC statesman.
