Official statement from Zahara’s family as SA mourns

‘May we remember Zahara not with sorrow, but with the healing, joy, kindness, and inspiration she brought to us through her life and her music.’

The Mkutukana family has released a statement following the passing of musician Zahara – real name Bulelwa Mkutukana – who was 36 years old.

The platinum-selling musician died on Monday, 11 December, at a private hospital in Johannesburg.

ZAHARA’S FAMILY CONFIRMS HER PASSING

“It is with heavy hearts and deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved daughter, sister, and friend, Zahara. Surrounded by family and loved ones, Zahara departed this world on Monday, 11 December 2023.

“She was a pure light, and an even purer heart, in this world. A beacon of hope, a gift and a blessing to us and countless people around the world.

“A legendary figure in the world of music, Zahara remarkably touched millions of people’s lives with her extraordinary gift and passion for music. She leaves behind an indelible mark on the music industry and a legacy that will forever resonate in our hearts and souls.”

The family said that it would like for the musician to be remembered for healing the nation through her inspirational music.

“A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. May we remember Zahara not with sorrow, but with the healing, joy, kindness, and inspiration she brought to us through her life and her music.

“May she rest in eternal peace, and may her melodies continue to echo in our heats forever, ” read the statement.

TRIBUTES POUR IN

Zahara’s death has sent shock waves through social media. Her fans, friends, and industry colleagues have been paying tribute since the news broke.

“What a sad moment. Thank you for pouring your heart out through music sister. May your beautiful soul rest easy. You touched many including me with your undeniable talent,” Prince Kaybee wrote.

Sports broadcaster, Motshidisi Mohono wrote: “It was always this song, for me. Even on a great day, I’d cry when it comes on. A stunning, beautiful and raw talent! Thank you for sharing your gift with us. O robale ka khotso, Zahara. Condolences to her family and friends.”

“Zahara did a lot for the music industry in South Africa. She paved the way for so many others with her iconic presence and guitar in hand. She will be missed. I never knew her personally but her music was loud and brave #ripzahara. Praying for her family. She was loved,” Lady Zamar wrote.
