It’s been quite a journey for the dynamic media personality, Lalla Hirayama, born in Hiratsuka, Japan, on 10 February 1988, she embodies a unique blend of cultures and experiences that have shaped her into the remarkable individual she is today.

The only child of a Japanese mother and a white South African father of Jewish descent, Lalla‘s upbringing was a fascinating fusion of traditions, including Buddhism, Shinto, Judaism, and Christianity. After a childhood spent in Japan and a brief stint in Australia, she finally settled in South Africa at the age of six.

Lalla Hirayama’s foray into the entertainment world began at a young age when she first graced South African screens at just 15. Over the years, she wore many hats, from being a live continuity presenter for SABC1 to her role as ‘Felicia’ on E-TV’s prime-time soapie, Rhythm City.

She also became a well-known figure in the dance world and was part of the official dancers for renowned artists of her time, like Lebo Mathosa and Skwatta Kamp.

In 2009, Lalla Hirayama significantly impacted the modelling world, featuring in the FHM calendar and earning a spot in FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World.

Her influence extended beyond the modelling realm, winning accolades like Glamour magazine’s ‘Most Glamorous’ award and the ‘Best Innovative Style’ at the South African Style Awards.

But Lalla Hirayama’s life took a different turn when she opened up about her struggles with mental health in 2023. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she candidly shared her journey through a challenging phase of her life.

She spoke of feeling lost and struggling with her mental health, but she also expressed her gratitude to her psychiatrist and partner, Ross McIlroy, for their unwavering support.

Today, Lalla Hirayama is focused on holistic healing, emphasizing self-care, and connecting with nature. She’s embracing a simpler, more authentic version of herself, leaving behind the trappings of fame and luxury.

Her recent Instagram posts show a ‘plain Lalla,’ makeup-free, enjoying the outdoors, bonding with her pets, and savouring organic food and good red wine.

In her own words, Lalla is “surrendering to everything that is around me” and is releasing the emotional baggage that has weighed her down.
