South Africans on social media have come in numbers to bid the late award-winning actor and playwright, Mbongeni Ngema farewell. According to a family statement, the late veteran died on Wednesday evening, 27 December in a fatal car crash on his way back from attending a funeral service in Mbizana in the Eastern Cape.

The family statement shared on Wednesday evening announced the death of the late 68-year-old Sarafina! composer and it said: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother, father, husband, and patriot Mbongeni Ngema… Ngema was killed in a head-on car accident while returning from attending a funeral in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape this evening. He was a passenger in the vehicle.”

According to Sunday World, Ngema’s nephew Sabelo said that although his uncle was not the driver of the vehicle, he unfortunately sustained severe injuries that led to his death.

Ngema made a name for himself as one of South Africa’s most celebrated theatre producers, directors, composers and playwrights. South Africans on social media have since paid tribute to him in abundance.

Eish nkosi yam. Constable Sabela is no more,” @StevenSibuyi6 reacted.

“May the soul rest 🕊,” @BonvHouse said.
