According to an unbelievable claim, Mandoza’s widow, Mpho Tshabalala, is set to earn “millions” in royalties after his hit song Nkalakatha became an unofficial Rugby World Cup anthem.

The claim was made by a tweep who suggested Mpho may very well earn more than the Springboks players themselves.

Mandoza – real name Mduduzi Shabalala – died in 2016 after a battle with cancer.

NKALAKATHA’: WILL MANDOZA’S WIFE EARN MILLIONS?

According to Twitter user @ramalokot, Mandoza’s wife, Mpho Tshabalala, was expecting a hefty cheque following the Rugby World Cup.

The tweet read: “Did you know? If #Springboks win, Mandoza’s wife will be R179m richer”.

The tweep clarified that this would be as a result of Samro royalties after the later singer’s song Nkalakatha was played multiple times at the event. It was also a hit on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

Jacaranda FM Rob Forbes added to the commentary, posting a meme with the caption: “Someone at French SAMRO is fuming about the Nkalakatha royalties on their 2023 itemised bill”.

However, according to Hip Hop media personality Illy The Host, the figures was more likely near the R2 million mark.

Speaking to The South African, Mpho said of viral claim: “It’s my first time hearing such, but I receive in Jesus name.

Nkalakatha was released in 2000 and has been a favourite by South Africans of all ages and races.

‘AN INCH FROM ENDING APARTHEID’

Speaking to The Sowetan, Mandoza’s widow revealed the revival of Nkalakatha amid the Rugby World Cup and a BET Africa biopic was a bittersweet feeling.

She said: “I have mixed feelings about how popular this song is during this time. I find myself asking, ‘Why isn’t Mduduzi [Mandoza’s real name] around to witness how loved his song is?’ I don’t even think he knew what his song has now become.

Mpho added that the singer’s fans claimed the hit song was “an inch away from ending Apartheid.”

She added: “He was just doing what he loves, which was making music, and he made a song that’s been played in France – 23 years later after its release.”
