‘Paving the way’: Kerishnie praises Bryoni for representing Indian women [watch]

Kerishnie Naiker has praised Miss Universe South Africa Bryoni Govender, the second only Indian woman to represent the country.

She may not have won Miss Universe, but Bryoni Govender has won the praise of another iconic beauty queen and first Indian Miss South Africa, Kerishnie Naiker.

The 50-year-old businesswoman praised her younger pageant sister in a clip posted on her Instagram account.

KERISHNIE NAIKER PRAISES BRYONI GOVENDER

In the clip, Kerishnie Naiker – who won the Miss SA pageant more than two decades ago – praised Bryoni.

She said: “For the first time in 25 years since I had entered Miss Universe, we have an Indian representative of South Africa, Bryoni Govender.

“When I mentioned paving the way for future generations, this is exactly what it is about

She continued: “It’s about Indian women having a place on the global stage. It’s sad that we need to specify Indian women because our religion is love, and our race is human”.

Kerishnie added that women of colour often experienced cultural discrimination.

She added: “It’s so important that we have an appreciation for diversity and different cultures.”

THE FIRST INDIAN MISS SA

Kerishnie Naiker became the first South African of Indian descent to win Miss SA in 1997. The Durban beauty queen placed in the Top 5 at Miss World and the Top 10 at Miss Universe the following year.

According to Angelopedia, Kerishnie was determined to fulfill her dream of winning the SA beauty pageant despite her parents’ protests.

At the age of 24 – the then cut-off age of Miss SA – Kerishnie entered the pageant.

Kerishnie is now involved in the behind-the-scenes management of the competition.
