The ANC politician was pictured in a bright-yellow Dolce and Gabbana track suit and the comments were unflattering to say the least! It didn’t get any better for the former Minister of Transport once followers found out how much his outfit could have been worth!

Mbalula was part of an ANC delegation that flew to Paris to support the Springboks at the recently concluded World Cup Final. While they were all kitted out in expensive designer wear, it’s Mbalula’s outfit that has caught the attention of the nation for all the wrong reasons.

Although many would envy his budget for being able to afford such a luxury item, others gawked at how badly-put-together the final result was. It didn’t get any better for Mbalula after a user pointed out that the combined value of both items was close to R29,000.

Fans mock ‘Takalani Sesame’ outfit

Just when it couldn’t get worse for the ANC Secretary General, a new wave of memes went viral – sparked by his bright outfit. Users compared the outspoken politician to Takalani Sesame character, Moshe (AKA Big Bird) whose golden-yellow feathery costume was a big part of many South Africans’ childhood.

Mbalula, for his part, did not take the jokes to heart. He responded to many of the memes which circulated on the weekend joking that he’d rather look like Moshe than look like one of the Teletubbies. Outside of the fashion world, he’s been called into duty to speak about the ongoing tension between South African leadership and the state broadcaster, the SABC.

In a widely-circulated news snippet from a media briefing on 30 October 2023, Mbalula can be heard saying “The SABC was a big problem, and if someone is telling you in the passages let me tell you openly today. We were just being decent not to attack you in public.”
