Minister of Police Bheki Cele has confirmed the suspicions of many AKA fans that the rapper was killed by someone close to him.

The bombshell allegation was made during the minister’s radio interview on Metro FM.

The muso and friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane were shot and killed by gunmen on 10 February outside a Durban restaurant. An arrest has yet to be made.

AKA KILLED BY ‘CLOSE ASSOCIATES’

Speaking to Metro FM’s Faith Mangope, Bheki Cele revealed new information about a police investigation into the death of AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes.

When asked for an update, Cele claimed that police were still gathering information, which they had received from two eyewitnesses, who were now in police protection.

Asked if AKA was killed by “inkabi” [hitmen], the minister said: “I guess once you are hired, you are inkabi, but some of those people were close associates [of the deceased].”

Faith interjected: “So close associates of AKA were part of orchestrating the murder of AKA according to the intelligence you’ve got so far?

Cele continued: “Let me end there. But that you have said, I think it is enough for the public to understand that we are close [to solving the case]”.

FANS RUN WILD WITH SPECULATION

Just hours before his death, AKA wined and dined with a group of close friends. He also ran into celebrity chef Tibz Motsoane, who was sadly caught in the crossfire of gunmen.

On X, fans of the rapper had already begun speculating about what the minister had said.

“It is always those close to you,” posted on tweep. Another added: “A fact of life is that your so-called friends are your worst enemies. They knew his every move. The plot was easy for them”.

Others called on the minister and SAPS to arrest the suspects immediately.

MURDER INVESTIGATION: WHAT WE KNOW

Here is what police have revealed to the public in the ten months since AKA and Tibz’s death:

  • Recovering cellphone data and video footage from the night of his death
  • Locating the getaway cars and firearms used in the murders
  • Identifying two eyewitnesses – who have gone into protection – who have offered information
