South African media personality Anele Mdoda is arguably one of the country’s most talented TV and radio stars. The mom of one has a way with people and has grown herself a huge following over the years. Earlier this year, she left everyone howling with laughter after sharing how a club bill nearly ruined her festive last year.
Speaking on her show, The Breakfast Club, she shared how a waitress duped her into buying a R16 000 bottle of tequila — almost her entire festive budget.
While the story garnered mixed reactions from her followers, it also opened up doors for the media personality who was asked to host the prestigious alcoholic brand’s Icon Ball and Oscars screening, which took place in Houghton over the weekend.
Anele’s Don Julio debacle ends in fun nights and partnerships
On Sunday, 10 March this year, the 96th Academy Awards — also known as “The Oscars” — took place and was hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel.
As usual, there were the awards, the various celebs who handed them over, and John Cena, who appeared on stage naked.
Back in South Africa, those who couldn’t get seats to the prestigious awards ceremony were treated to a screening by Don Julio.
On Sunday, 10 March, local stars and revered thespians such as Zola Nombona, Nirvana Nokwe-Mseleku, Mondli Makhoba, and more, took to the classy Houghton suburbs to watch a live screening of the Academy Awards.
The classy Don Julio Icon Ball was hosted by none other than Anele Mdoda.
She went viral earlier this year after detailing how she was led to buy a bottle of 1942 Don Julio by an evasive waitress in Cape Town.
From paying to getting paid
According to the 94.7 Breakfast Club show host, she visited a nightclub and asked for any tequila.
Taking advantage of the vague request, her waitress brought out a bottle of 1942 Don Julio, which Anele happily enjoyed — until the bill arrived.
The story went viral as South Africans discussed similar mishaps that happened to them.
In the end, it all worked out well for Anele, who not only received a free bottle of the premium tequila but is now hosting events for the company.
Needless to say, her fans love this win for Anele and have given her a thumbs up for capitalising on the entire thing.
