Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and national hero Ronwen Williams has revealed the heartbreaking reason he looks to the sky after saving a goal.

According to the 32-year-old, that reason is his guardian angel and older brother, Marvin, who died more than a decade ago.

Ronwen made history over the weekend in a game against Cape Verde by becoming the only goalkeeper to save four penalties during a shoot-out. He has also tied with former Bafana player Andre Arendse in achieving four clean sheets during an Afcon tournament.

RONWEN WILLIAMS HONOURS LATE BROTHER AFTER EVERY GOAL

In scenes from Bafana’s game against Cape Verde, Ronwen Williams was seen dropping to his knees after each penalty save. He also looked to the sky, where he appeared to whisper a few words.

According to FarPost, this is Ronwen’s way of honouring his older brother Marvin, who died in a car crash in 2010.

At the time of Marvin’s death, Ronwen had just signed with Supersport United. He left playing indefinitely to bury his brother and had to be talking into rejoining the club.   He’d later be trained by Andre Arendse himself, who is an assistant coach at the club.

WHY HE BECAME A GOALKEEPER

Meanwhile, Ronwen Williams has previously revealed why he chose to become a goalkeeper and not in any other position.

Speaking to new club Mamelodi Sundown’s Pitchside Podcast, he said: “I was a striker and enjoyed scoring goals. I was very fast; I know I don’t look fast, but I was very fast.”

“But I looked up to my uncle, who was a goalkeeper. He was one of the best. He played for EP at the provincials, and I wanted to be like him, and that’s when I started going in goals”.
