‘Where was I’: Trevor Noah loses Golden Globe to Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais beat Trevor Noah and several other Golden Globe nominees for the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy category.

South African-born international stand-up comedian Trevor Noah lost the Golden Globe to Ricky Gervais – the seasoned comedian has since graciously taken to Instagram and congratulated all the winners as seen in his post shared on his feed on Monday, 8 January.


The 81st Golden Globes took place in Beverly Hills on Sunday, 7 January — they were announced on Monday. This year, two new categories were introduced, including Cinematic and Box Office Achievement as well as Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy, People reported. Ricky Gervais became the first person to win the new category honouring stand-up comedians, beating several comedians including Trevor Noah.

According to Entertainment Weekly, he has emceed the awards show five times and wasn’t even at the annual ceremony this time around to receive his award. Gervais is said to have made history at the 2024 Golden Globes after winning the ceremony’s first-ever award for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.

The 62-year-old American comedian reportedly won for his Netflix special Ricky Gervais: Armageddon. “Thank you so much for all your lovely comments and kind words about my Golden Globe win. Best fans in the world”, Gervais wrote on X (the social media platform previously known as Twitter).

Other nominated comedians in the category besides Ricky Gervais and Trevor Noah were Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, and Wanda Sykes. The 39-year-old South African-born comedian was nominated for Noah: Where Was I. He had all good things to say to all the award winners upon losing to Gervais. On his feed, Noah said, “What a weekend! Congratulations to everyone who was recognized for their art at the Creative Arts Emmys and Golden Globe Awards! A beautiful start to 2024!”
