Another South African is flying the country’s flag high on much-loved televised British talent show competition, Britain’s Got Talent (BGT). Last year, the country was rooting for dancer and cancer survivor Musa Motha – who made it to the final, but sadly did not win the competition. This year, on season 17 of the show, Mzansi is represented by opera singer Nkululeko Innocent Masuku.

INNOCENT MASUKU SHINES ON THE ‘BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT’ STAGE

The 33-year-old – who lives in London, England, and is an operatic tenor – took to the BGT stage to perform a rendition of Lucio Dalla’s song titled Casuro.

After an impressive performance, which earned him a standing ovation from all four judges and the crowd, judge Amanda Holden said Masuku was “hands-down the best opera singer” they have ever seen in the history of the show.

Bruno Tonioli told the singer that he was “very special”. Alesha Dixon said his performance was “overwhelming and divine” and Simon Cowell called it “wonderful”.

ZIZI KODWA CONGRATULATES THE SINGER

Although he did not get the golden buzzer, which would have sent them straight through to the next round of live shows, Masuku is being celebrated back home.

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, wished him well in the competition.

“South African creatives continue to raise the country’s flag high around the world. I congratulate Innocent Masuku on his sterling performance in Britain’s Got Talent. All the best as you proceed in the competition!”

WHO IS INNOCENT MASUKU?

Masuku was born in Secunda, Mpumalanga. He is a former studio member of the Cape Town Opera where he made his first public performance as Crabman in a production of Porgy and Bess set in Argentina.

Since then, Masuku has received various accolades including a Merit award in the 2019 SAMRO competition and a Drake Calleja trust award. In addition, the singer has earned The Oppenheimer International Scholarship, and The Countess of Munster Musical Trust Study Award for his talents, helping thrust him onto the international stage.

Currently, Masuku is part of the English National Opera, playing Count Almaviva in Barber of Seville. Previously, he played Remendado on Carmen; Gastone on The Dead City; The Son on Blue (Cover); Leonard Meryll on The Yeomen of the Guard; and The Spirit of the Masque on Gloriana. All of these productions are by the English National Opera.
