Mr Ibu to be buried three months after death, funeral details revealed

The late Nollywood actor known as Mr Ibu died on 2 March. His family has recently announced his funeral details in a statement.

Over a month after the death of the late Nollywood actor Mr Ibu — real name John Okafor, his family has finally announced his burial date, Daily Post reported.


The veteran actor Mr Ibu died on 2 March at the age of 62 years. He passed away at Evercare Hospital in Nigeria. According to the publication, the actor’s family said Mr Ibu will be buried in his hometown Amuri, in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

According to a statement signed by Mr Ibu’s elder brother Elder Sunday Okafor, the beloved late actor will be laid to rest on 28 June.

“The Okafor family in Eziokwe Amuri, Nkanu West LGA in Enugu State wishes to honour the loving memory of our hero and legend John Ikechukwu Okafor who even in death has left a legacy of love, laughter and liveliness…

“We would appreciate your esteemed presence as we lay to rest our son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and in-law on the 28th of June 2024…

“Kindly join us as we share the best and last moments with our icon,” the statement was quoted as saying.

Okafor made his mark in the film industry two decades ago in the move titled Mr Ibu, BBC reported. Since then, the Nigerian star starred in several films including Mr Ibu in London, A Fool at 40, Police Recruit, and more.

According to the publication, the late actor was described by Nigeria’s Culture Minister Hannatu Musawa as a household name who had made families smile throughout his career.

Mr Ibu died of cardiac arrest after a prolonged battle with ailment, P.M News reported. Late last year, the late actor took to social media and pleaded with his fans and social media followers for donations for a surgery, saying if he did not get the surgery, he might have to get his legs amputated.

This comes after sharing that he had been struggling with his health for several weeks. According to several sources, Mr Ibu went for several rounds of surgery due to his illness, however, he still had to get his limbs amputated.

It was reported that Mr Ibu will be receiving a five-day send-off, with the last day being on 28 June. According to the statement seen by the publication, the five-day burial includes a burial ceremony on 25 June, a session called Mr Ibu’s Night on 26 June, a Christian Wake on 27 June, and the funeral service to take place the following day.

The burial ceremony will reportedly be wrapped up on Sunday, 30 June with a Church Thanksgiving for family members and friends.
