Issa Rae considers independence amidst Black TV cancellations

In the ever-evolving landscape of television, Issa Rae, the visionary behind the mantra “I’m rooting for everybody Black,” is addressing a concerning trend: the dwindling representation of Black stories on the small screen.

ISSA RAE AND BLACK TELEVISION

In a recent conversation with Net-A-Porter, Rae expressed her dismay at the increasing number of cancellations for Black-centric shows. She signaled a need for change in the industry according to BET.

The Emmy-nominated creator of A Black Lady Sketch Show and Rap Sh!t highlighted the cancellation of several impactful shows in 2023, including ABC dramas Grown-ish and The Wonder Years, Showtime’s Ziwe, Freeform’s Everything’s Trash, and FX’s Kindred.

ISSA RAE’S TV SHOWS

Even Rae’s creation, Rap Sh!t, faced the chopping block at HBO Max after two seasons. The alarming trend extends beyond mere cancellations, as Rae noted a decline in the prioritization of diverse narratives within the industry.

Rae pinpointed the departure of executives focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion as evidence that the industry’s commitment to telling Black stories is waning.

TELLING BLACK STORIES

“You’re seeing so many executives – especially on the DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] side – get canned Issa Rae shared.

You’re seeing very clearly now that our stories are less of a priority,” Rae lamented.

GOING INDEPENDENT

Frustrated by the lack of accountability in the industry, Issa Rae, a trailblazer herself, hinted at a potential shift in her approach.

“I am pessimistic because there’s no one holding anybody accountable – and I can, sure, but also at what cost? I can’t force you to make my stuff. It’s made me take more steps to try to be independent down the line if I have to,” she explained.
