‘We thought we were going to win’: Irish boyband Westlife wear Bok shirts at CPT concert [watch]

Irish boyband Westlife were praised for being good sports after they kicked off their first leg of their SA concert wearing Springboks shirts.

Popular boyband Westlife – of Ireland – has praised South Africa and the Springboks for winning the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The quartet – who performed their first leg of the SA concert in Cape Town on Wednesday – even showed up on stage in official Bok shirts!

Despite the fierce rivalry between the countries, the group of men were branded “good sports” over the gesture.

WESTLIFE PRAISE THE SPRINGBOKS

During their performance at the GrandWest Arena in Cape Town on Wednesday evening, Westlife referenced the recent Rugby World Cup win.

One of the singers told the audience: “Do you know how weird it is for four Irish men to stand on stage in South Africa? We thought we were going to win the World Cup”.

Although teasing the crowd that Ireland “did beat South Africa,” the boyband came out on stage wearing Springboks shirts and waving both a SA and Ireland flag.

They added: “What a great final, and you guys were absolutely brilliant.”

Westlife’s touching gesture was greatly appreciated by South Africans on social media.

“Love Westlife, will exempt them being Irish,” posted one tweep. Another added: “Iconic”.

Westlife was formed in 1998 and consists of members Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Shane Filan, and Mark Feehily. 

According to the Irish Examiner, they are the most famous boyband from Ireland and have sold over 55 million records worldwide. They also hold four Guinness World Records, including being one of the biggest-selling bands in the 2000s.

The group has toured SA on multiple occasions.

WHERE TO NEXT?

Westlife will continue their Cape Town tour on Thursday, 2 November at the GrandWest  Arena.

From 3-5 November, they will take Pretoria’s Time Square.

All but one of the dates are sold out. According to Big Concerts, there are a few tickets available for their concert on 5 November.
