Beyoncé’s highly anticipated concert film Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé was released on the 1 December, World Aids Day, which is reportedly in honour of the artist’s Uncle Johnny.

BEYONCÉ HONOURS UNCLE JOHNNY

While at the film’s London premiere on Thursday, the 30 November Beyoncé told the crowd that she was really proud of the body of work she created in honour of her late Uncle Johnny.

“I’m really proud this film is coming out on December 1st, World AIDS Day, in honour of Uncle Johnny”, the artist shared.

Beyoncé’s Uncle Johnny died of AIDS related complications when she was just 17 years old. According to media publication them Beyoncé’s love for her Uncle Johnny was the main driving force and inspiration behind her Renaissance project.

The Renaissance album was released in July 2022. At the time of its release Beyoncé dedicated it to him in a poignant statement shared to her website.

“A big thank you to my uncle Johnny. He was my godmother and the first person to expose me to a lot of the music and culture that serve as inspiration to this album”.

The Alien Superstar singer continued: “Thank you to all of the pioneers who originate culture, to all of the fallen angels whose contributions have gone unrecognized for far too long. This is a celebration for you”.

‘UNCLE JOHNNY MADE MY DRESS!’

In her song Heated, Beyoncé explicitly references her Uncle Johnny singing, “Uncle Johnny made my dress”. This lyric references Beyoncé’s high school prom dress that Uncle John made for the artist.

In a post shared to Instagram, Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles shared how close Beyoncé and her sister Solange were close to her nephew, Uncle Johnny.

“He was my nanny / housekeeper / designer / dance partner / [confidant] and bestie. Solange and Beyoncé worshiped him. He helped me raise them. And influenced their sense of style and uniqueness!”, she shared.

Tina Knowles continued: “When I first heard Beyoncé singing] ‘Uncle Johnny made my dress’… I got so teary eyed. You see Johnny loved house music! And introduced my kids to it early on. He is smiling from Heaven at Bey right now!”.
