Why Australia’s Mitchell Starc was wearing a black armband in the finals

Here’s why Australian cricket player Mitchell Starc was wearing a black armband at the Cricket World Cup 2023 final.

Australia’s Mitchell Starc honoured his late friend, Phillip Hughes by wearing a ‘PH’ black armband at the World Cup in India.

Zee News reports that Australian cricketer Mitchell Starc wore a black armband embroidered with the initials PH in the World Cup 2023 to pay tribute to Phil Hughes.

The late Phil Hughes, who was also an Australian cricketer passed away in 2014 at the age of 25 when he was struck in the neck by a bouncer while playing for New South Wales.

Hughes reportedly collapsed on the field and, despite immediate medical attention, succumbed to his injuries. BBC reports that an Australian team doctor, Peter Brukner said he passed away in hospital, after never regaining consciousness.

Hughes, who also played for Hampshire, Middlesex and Worcestershire, was hit by a delivery from bowler Sean Abbott.

His passing prompted significant safety protocol changes in cricket, which led to the introduction of enhanced helmets and neck guards.

Starc, who was a close friend and teammate of Hughes, trended on social media when cricket fans spotted the PH armband at the media briefing.
