The family of Anni Dewani – believed to have been a “murder for hire” victim of her husband, Shrien Dewani – are still grappling with grief 13 years after her death.

And according to her loved ones, the pain is still as fresh as the day she was brutally killed on 13 November 2010.

Anni was gunned down in a “botched hijacking” in Cape Town while on honeymoon with her husband, Shrien.

While Shrien was acquitted of any charges, three South African men – who claimed they were hired by the British businessman – pled guilty to her murder.

ANNI DEWANI’S FAMILY SPEAK ON DEATH ANNIVERSARY

This week, the family of Anni Dewani remembered her on the 13th anniversary of her death on 13 November.

Speaking from their home in Sweden, the family told IOL that they had commemorated her by visiting a beach where her ashes were scattered. The family placed white roses on the sand in memory of her life.

Her father Vinod told the publication: “Thirteen years is a long time, but it seems Anni was recently taken away from us. We miss her a lot.”

Vinod told the publication that if Anni had not been killed, she would be a successful businesswoman.

He added: “If Anni were alive today, we would be playing with our grandchildren, and she really loved children.”

Anni’s siblings Ami Denborg and Anish Hindocha have posted pics and clips on Facebook of their family gatherings on her birthday and anniversary

In a Facebook group, In Memory of Anni Hindocha, aka Dewani, followers post pics and tributes to the slain brunette.

ORCHESTRATED BY SHRIEN?

On 13 November 2010, Anni and Shrien Dewani were allegedly hijacked in their hired taxi while sightseeing in Gugulethu, Cape Town.

According to Shrien, who had wed Anni just two weeks earlier, hijackers Mziwamadoda Qwabe, and Xolile Mngeni robbed him of valuables and forced both him and driver and tour guide Zola Tonga out of their moving vehicle.

The next day, Annie’s body – with a single gunshot wound to her neck – was found in the VW Sharan.

However, in court proceedings, all three men shocked the public when they claimed that they were hired as part of a premeditated murder plan by Shrien.

Shrien Dewani – who had returned to the UK – was extradited to South Africa in 2014. He then faced a trial with charges of orchestrating the kidnapping and murder of his bride.

However, he was acquitted of all charges due to a lack of evidence.

According to judge Jeanette Traverso, this was due to “many mistakes, lies and inconsistencies” in the allegations made by the three men against Dewani.

‘GET AWAY WITH MURDER’

After being acquitted of the murder of Anni, Shrien Dewani continued his life out of the spotlight.

In 2016, Shrien vehemently denied the allegations in a letter to a London coroner. He wrote:

“Each of the gang members did a deal with the authorities to gain either full immunity or vastly reduced sentences in return for providing evidence against me.

“It is the evidence of these proven liars [suspects] that led to a witch hunt against me and the resulting failure to pursue the truth of what happened that night.

“This has allowed the individuals concerned to literally get away with murder.”.
