Morocco and South Africa – Bafana Bafana – will face off against each other in a highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Top 16 match on Tuesday, 30 January.

The winner will take on Cape Verde in the quarter-finals over the weekend.

But while the track record of the boys in yellow and green has been a source of amusement, their opponents have the full support of their country, wives, and even moms!

MAKE OR BREAK FOR BAFANA BAFANA

On Tuesday, 30 January, Bafana Bafana will take on Morocco in the Afcon round of 16. The match takes place at the San Pedro Stadium in Ivory Coast at 22:00 SA time.

Should they win, they will advance to the competition’s quarter-finals and face Cape Verde this weekend.

According to coach Hugo Broos, a victory in the crucial match could pave the way to winning the Afcon title.

In a media conference, he said, “So we know that if we can [beat Morocco], we take a big step towards what we all wanted — playing in the final and maybe winning it.”

MOROCCO MOMS TO SHOW UP?

Following Morocco’s history progression to the Fifa World Cup finals back in 2022, we’ve seen the national team celebrate their momentous victories with their mothers.

Here are three moms who stand out from the crowd.

After Morocco’s notable victory over Portugal during the World Cup, star player Sofiane Boufal pulled his mom out from the stadium stands onto the pitch to do a victory dance together.

When Morocco beat Spain in the Top 16, Achraf Hakimi spotted his mom in the stands and gave her a sweet kiss.

In 2020, a clip of a teary Hakim Ziyech – who donated 100% of his earnings from team Morocco during the World Cup – went viral. In it, the player’s mother shared an emotional video message expressing her pride in him.

“Do your best, take care, and behave like a gentleman,” she said.
