Veteran musician and TV personality Zola 7 is very much alive, contrary to some claims being made on social media. Twitter was awash with posts from several users who alleged that the 47-year-old, whose real name is Bonginkosi Dlamini, had passed away.

But others on the blue bird app claimed to have received confirmation that the star was in fact fine and was merely another victim of a death hoax. On Saturday, 24 July 2021, there were tributes on Twitter for veteran actress Lydia Mokgokoloshi, who plays the role of Koko Mantsha on the popular SABC 1 soap Skeen Saam. Producers and co-stars were quick to rubbish the allegation and said the 80-year-old was alive and well.

Concerns over Zola 7’s health

Many were quick to believe that Zola 7 may have died, mainly because just weeks before, he made headlines for his deteriorating health condition. City Press reported that the star was diagnosed with chronic epilepsy three years ago.

“Iqhawe lethu [Our hero] has been struggling with epilepsy for a number of years. Due to lack of knowledge, we didn’t understand the illness, hence it has been neglected for so long. However, we have it by the horns, battling it daily,” his partner, Siki Kunene is quoted as having said.

Zola 7 has been candid about his health. During an interview with podcaster Macgyver “Mac G” Mukwevho on Podcast and Chill With Mac G, he opened up about his ailments.

“I lost a lot of weight over the past year. I was extremely sick, I was home and I was shaking. Everybody around me was scared I was going to die. I couldn’t eat well. I was eating Mageu, porridge and Fish,” he said.

“Nowadays I have to take medication twice a day just to get by. I was very sick during that song [with Cassper] and I think we did about 25 cuts. I was fighting to look normal, but I wasn’t. I was extremely very sick during that video.”
