Expensive drinks and R40K: Inside Thuli P and Maphorisa’s fight

A man who made advances at actress Thuli Phongolo at a gig the night before DJ Maphorisa allegedly assaulted her, is reportedly the reason the pair were fighting – Sunday World reports.

Maphorisa – real name Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe – was arrested on Sunday, 7 May. He was released on R4 000 bail after his court appearance the following day.

COUPLE ALLEGEDLY ARGUED OVER STRANGER WHO MADE ADVANCES AT ACTRESS

The publication reports that the Izolo hitmaker lost his cool at a gig when a man showed interest in Thuli. The stranger allegedly bought expensive drinks for the former Generations: The Legacy actress’ table in a bid to woo her.

“He was balling and somehow he made advances to Thuli and promised to send her R40 000 on the spot to show off,” a source was quoted as saying.

“Maphorisa found out and got angry because he does a lot of things for Thuli. That is disrespectful. So, he threw a tantrum, which later escalated to the assault when they got home,” the source continued.

The couple allegedly argued in full view of everyone.

MAPHORISA ALLEGEDLY ASSAULT THULI

On Sunday, City Press reported that the 29-year-old Rockville actress had opened a case of gender-based violence (GBV) against the BlaqBoy Music record label owner.

The publication reported that the assault incident took place at the actress’ apartment in Sandton, Johannesburg.

“On Sunday 2023/5/7 at about 12pm, I was at my place of residence with my boyfriend, Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, better known as DJ Maphorisa. I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig,” said Phongolo in the statement.

She alleged that Maphorisa became aggressive and punched her on her chest, also slapping her across the face and with his elbow on her

“He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” the statement continued.

The actress reportedly sustained bruises on her neck, chest, arms and right cheek.

ACTRESS WITHDRAWS CHARGES

However, on Monday, the court heard that Thuli had filed a withdrawal statement – meaning she does not want to continue with the case and wants the charges dropped.

Magistrate Clement Mukhodobwane said the bail condition was that the accused should not have direct or indirect communication with the complainant.

“Phongolo filed a withdrawal statement and was before court to which she agreed for the accused to be released on bail. The court set bail at an amount of R4 000,” spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng, Phindi Mjonondwane said.

Thuli’s plea, however, has not yet been finalised as the NPA will still investigate, among other things, if she did not file the withdrawal under duress. The case has been postponed to 14 June.
