Malcolm Marx has only just been officially ruled out of the Rugby World Cup in France, and fans are already calling for his replacement via fellow Springboks player Joseph Dweba.

On Thursday, 14 September, SA Rugby released a statement that claimed that Marx had sustained a serious knee injury. The move would put him out of play for several weeks.

In his absence, the national am would utilise their other specialist hooker; Bongi Mbonambi, who will captain the side against Romania on Sunday, 17 September.

But where does Dweba fit in?

MALCOLM MARX: END OF RUGBY WORLD CUP ROAD

According to Springboks coach Jacques Nienaber, Malcolm Marx sustained an injury during training in Toulon on Wednesday, 13 September.

Marx made his 64th Test appearance in the Springboks’s first Rugby World Cup game against Scotland last Sunday. However, according to reports by the team, Malcolm will not play again in the tournament.

Nienaber said in a statement to SA Rugby: “First and foremost, we are extremely disappointed for Malcolm, and we wish him all the best in his recovery.

“He’s been working very hard to be in the best form possible for the tournament, and it’s tragic that his campaign has ended this way. As a team, we will remain in contact with him, as we do with all injured players”.

Malcolm Marx will be covered by fellow specialist hooker Bongi Mbonambi, who will be captioning the matchday squad on Sunday.

According to Nienaber players Deon Fourie and Marco van Staden will also step into the position, should the need arise

DWEBA EN ROUTE TO FRANCE?

While Springboks coach Jacques Nienaber made no mention of Joseph Dweba as a specialist hooker replacement, social media are speculating that he may already be en route to France.

Dweba – who was not named in the 33-man Rugby World Cup squad last month – joined the Springboks in 2021.

But many rugby fans are of the belief that he isn’t good enough for a Rugby World Cup squad.

@PrinceLeshiba29: “I am sorry Dweba has not yet proven that he deserves to be in WC squad”

@scrumming_ten: “Pollard will win you a game. Dweba will lose you one.”

@KingNkabindeIII: “Whatever you do, please do not call on Joseph Dweba”
