Kaizer Chiefs supporters have defended the club’s manager, Bobby Motaung, after he attended controversial businessman Edwin Sodi’s 50th birthday party.

The fraud-accused entrepreneur set tongues wagging on social media after his lavish birthday celebration which was reportedly held at the weekend at his upmarket Bryanston mansion which is reportedly valued at R100 million.

The lush event saw guests, including the ANC’s Gauteng provincial secretary TK Nciza, Bobby Motaung, Joburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda’s spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase’s and others.

Sodi, who is the CEO of Blackhead Consulting, received backlash for his opulent lifestyle amid his corruption charges.

The businessman is linked to a failed R100 million water project in the Free State, according to the Mail and Guardian.

In May this year, Sodi was reported to have appeared before the Bloemfontein magistrate’s court. He was facing more than 70 counts of corruption, fraud, money laundering and asbestos contraventions relating to a R255 million Free State contract.

Sodi is also implicated in the Rooiwal project which resulted in a cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal, Tshwane. The contract was awarded in October 2019, during former DA member Stevens Mokgalapa’s tenure as mayor of the city.

On Sunday, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) said President Cyril Ramaphosa had authorised it to probe allegations of maladministration and corruption in the affairs of the city relating to the tender.

A netizen, named @joy_zelda, took to X (formerly Twitter) to claimed that Bobby Motaung was one of the guest at Sodi’s party because the businessman funds Kaizer Chiefs.

“So all along Edwin Sodi has been funding Kaizer Chiefs as well with fraud money, Bobby Motaung attending his 50th Birthday doesn’t he have shame to be associated with such an criminal who has blood in his hand with the death of people in Hammanskraal, Hawks are failing us here.”
