Canadian filmmaker and ocean explorer James Cameron, says he sees parallels between the blunders that led to the fate of the Titan submersible and sinking of the Titanic.

On Thursday, it was reported that the Titan submersible imploded, killing all five people on board to see Titanic shipwreck.

Cameron, who is famously known as the director of the Titanic movie, said he warned of the dangers of visiting the legendary shipwreck.

“You’re going into one of the most unforgiving places on earth,” he told the New York Times in 2022.”‘It’s not like you can call up AAA to come get you,” he warned.

This week, the filmmaker said he was surprised by the similarity of the Titan submersible tragedy and the 1912 disaster where both captains seemed to ignore warnings.

Cameron’s warning was ignored

In 1912, Captain Edward Smith ignored multiple warnings from nearby ships that icebergs lay ahead of the ship. The Titanic steamed at full speed into an ice field and as the ice bumped along the ship starboard side, it punched holes inside flooding six compartments.

Within two hours,Titanic filled with water and sank, killing more than 1,500 people aboard.

“I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night, and many people died as a result,” Cameron told ABC News.

“And for a very similar tragedy, where warnings went unheeded, to take place at the same exact site, with all the diving that’s going on all around the world, I think it’s just astonishing.

“It’s really quite surreal,” Cameron said.
